The vertical distance from the floor to the roof must be at least 1200mm and there should be suitable seating for up to 8 passengers.
Doorways
For rear-loading wheelchair access vehicles
Requirements for rear-leading wheelchair access vehicles include:
- the wheelchair accessible doorway must be at least 1200mm high
- the nearside door and doorway must have an unrestricted opening of at least 600mm
- the top step into the passenger compartment must not exceed 460mm above ground level when unladen
- if the top step exceeds 460mm, and approved running boards are not fitted, an electrically operated step must be in place with the following requirements:
- a non-slip surface and high visibility edges
- retracts when not in use or when the vehicle is in motion
- operable from the driver's compartment
- use of an inhibitor device to stop the vehicle from moving when extended. For example, linked either to the handbrake mechanism, ABS sensors or taximeter feed
For all other vehicle types
Requirements for all other vehicles include:
- the wheelchair accessible doorway must be at least 1200mm high
- the nearside door and doorway must have an unrestricted opening of at least 750mm
- grab handles of a high visibility colour must be placed at door entrances
- the outer edge of the floor at each entrance must have non-slip treads and a contrasting colour band across the width
- the top step into the passenger compartment must not exceed 460mm above ground level when unladen
- if the top step exceeds 460mm, and approved running boards are not fitted, an electrically operated intermediate step must be in place with the following requirements:
- a non-slip surface and high visibility edges
- retracts when not in use or when the vehicle is in motion
- operable from the driver's compartment
- use of an inhibitor device to stop the vehicle from moving when extended. For example, linked either to the handbrake mechanism, ABS sensors or taximeter feed.
