2030 Net Zero Sheffield
We want Sheffield to be a flourishing, sustainable and inclusive city economy which creates opportunity and better jobs for Sheffielders. As a strong partner alongside businesses we have an ambition to be a net zero carbon city by 2030.
COP26: the 2021 United Nations climate change conference started on 31 October. It was where world leaders came together and aimed to commit to reducing carbon emissions at a rate to limit warming to 1.5 degrees.
What was decided influenced much of the work that is needed across the city to achieve our 2030 target. We were already working hard to reduce our emissions along with our partners across the city, and we are in the process of developing our 10 Point Plan, a key objective in our One Year Plan, to set out how we will tackle the climate emergency in Sheffield. It involves working with people, partners and businesses to develop and deliver the actions needed to deliver the plan.
Sheffield showcased all the climate change and net zero work happening over the city. The events, activities and action plan launches can be found below.

Our commitment to the climate and environment hasn’t just started here: we declared a climate emergency in 2019 and a nature emergency in 2021. Following this, there has been a big drive to achieve these commitments. We have published an independent assessment of the steps needed to get to Net Zero by 2030
Responding to the climate emergency gives new and unique opportunities for innovation on a city scale in:
- manufacturing businesses
- energy generation
- quality of housing
- transformation of our transport systems
