Many activities can affect the air that we breathe. Pollution from road traffic is not regulated by ourselves, although we have duties under air quality regulations to monitor it and implement strategies to deal with it.
Odour and fumes
Odour and fumes can occur from many different business activities from making steel, to the cooking of food at a local hot food takeaway.
Hot food takeaway smells
The majority of the smell complaints we receive are about hot food takeaway premises. We deal with this issue either at the planning stage or when a takeaway is in operation, checking the equipment being used.
Other smells
We will investigate these in a similar way to cooking smells, but use additional plant and equipment as a means of reducing the smell. The likely effect on health is non-existent or low if the smell is at very low concentrations.
We will take technical advice in order to minimise the smells, as well as taking medical advice when required. We can use our Statutory Nuisance legal powers but not to stop all smells coming from a business. For more information please contact us.
Dust pollution
Dust can be fine particles of dry matter generated from all manner of everyday activities including industry, agriculture, construction sites, transport or mineral workings.
We work with businesses to discuss the issues and achieve the necessary improvements, whenever possible. In some cases where this cooperation is not being given, we have to rely on our formal powers.
Should a Statutory Nuisance be established we will serve an abatement notice on the business responsible requiring them to take measures to reduce the dust. Failure to comply with the abatement notice can lead to a prosecution being taken.
