Allotments

We manage over 3,000 allotment plots on over 70 sites, including some plots designed for disabled people (wheelchair and non-wheelchair users) with raised beds. We can also create accessible plots at some sites when needed.

Allotments are a good way of producing healthy fruit and vegetables at a relatively low cost, and you can produce them organically.

We have no sites with immediate vacancies. Please contact us for information on sites with shorter waiting lists.

Avian Flu

There are new rules for allotment tenants with chickens from October 2022.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced new measures in light of the spread of Avian Flu.

Fires

Fires are not permitted from 1 May to 30 September. If you see a fire on an allotment during this time, please contact the allotment office immediately.

Charges and payments

The charge for an allotment depends on the size of the plot and whether the allotment site has a water supply.

Plot Size up to 100m²

rent: £31
water: £16.70
total: £47.40

Plot Size up to 200m²

rent: £63.10
water: £34.30
total: £97.40

Plot Size up to 300m²

rent: £90.75
water: £46.50
total: £137.25

Plot Size 301m² or above

rent: £135.05
water: £57.50
total: £192.55

If your site does not have a water mains supply you will only be charged for rent.

A 25% concession for all full time students, which includes those at college, university and those completing a Masters degree or PhD.

A 25% age-related concession can be claimed by tenants who reach state pension age on or before 1 April 2023.

If you receive Council Tax or Housing Benefit, we can check this on your behalf but you will need to email us with your consent to carry out this check.

For any other benefits, you will need to provide evidence for these as we will not be able to check them ourselves. Evidence can be in the form of screenshots, provided that we can see your name, address and benefits details clearly.

Things to consider before you apply

Having an allotment can be extremely rewarding, however, it is also a substantial commitment.

New allotment holders find that they quickly develop new skills and knowledge, and many plot holders see the development of their allotment as part of a positive lifestyle. However, there are a few things to think about before you get your first plot:

We have recently experienced a huge surge in demand. Many of our waiting lists are currently longer than usual. If you are keen to get a plot quickly and your nearest site has a long waiting list, it may be beneficial to consider other sites.

Allotment sites where pigeons are allowed

Pigeon keeping is allowed at:

Manor (lofts provided on certain plots)
Shirecliffe
Hollinsend
Mauncer Drive
Victoria Road

Mauncer Drive is the only site that is exclusively for pigeon keeping.

Allotment societies

Many allotment sites in Sheffield have their own society. Allotment societies often bring benefits to an allotment site such as reduced price seed for tenants, opportunities to meet and share knowledge with other tenants, plant swaps, fundraising and events.
