Private hire vehicle wheels and tyres

Learn about your vehicle’s tyres, treads and spare wheels.

Wheels

Your vehicle must be fitted with 4 road wheels.

Tyres

Your vehicle’s tyres cannot be over 10 years old.

All tyres, including the spare must have at least 2.0mm tread depth throughout the continuous band in:

  • the centre
  • three quarters of the tread
  • around the entire circumference of the tyre

You cannot use remoulded, or part worn tyres.

Defects

All tyres must be fit for purpose and free from any defects. This includes:

  • being compatible with the tyres fitted to the other wheels
  • not having any lump, bulge or tear or separation caused by partial failure of the structure
  • not having a cut or tear bigger than 25mm or 10 per cent of the sectional width of the tyre, whichever is greater, and which is deep enough to reach the ply or cord
  • not having any part of the ply or cord on show

Tyre inflation

Tyres must be correctly inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Space saver tyre

You must only use a space saver tyre in an emergency.

If you present a space saver tyre on your vehicle when it is being tested, it will fail the test.

Spare wheel

If a spare wheel is not supplied as standard by the manufacturer, you can use their recommended method of dealing with punctured tyres.

Your vehicle must come with a working wheel brace and jack.
