If your vehicle can carry wheelchair passengers, then it must conform to M1 classification and comply in all respects to EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA).
Anchorages
Your vehicle must provide an approved system to secure a wheelchair and wheelchair user. This is called an anchorage.
The anchorage must be either chassis or floor linked and must be able to deal with approved dynamic or static tests.
Restraints for wheelchair and passenger must be separate of each other.
Anchorages must also be provided for the safe storage of a wheelchair when not in use, whether this is folded or otherwise.
All anchorages and restraints must be so designed that they do not cause any danger to other passengers.
Ramps
A ramp or ramps for the loading of a wheelchair and user must always be available for use at the nearside rear passenger door.
An adequate locking device must be fitted to stop the ramp from slipping or tilting when in use.
You must make sure that the ramp can be stored safely when not in use.
Manufacturer’s guide
You should always keep in the vehicle the manufacturer’s user manual on the safe loading and unloading and security of wheelchair passengers.
