Private hire vehicle fuel systems

Learn about the different fuel systems your private hire vehicle can have.

If retrofit emissions technology has been fitted to your vehicle, the technology must have been approved as part of the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS).

A zero-emission capable vehicle can be described as either:

  • battery electric vehicle (BEV) or 'pure electric' where a battery is the only power source
  • plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) which switches between a battery and an internal combustion engine
  • hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) which is known as a 'full hybrid' and does not plug into the electricity grid, but recharges while you drive
  • fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) which uses onboard hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity
