Apply for skip and highway permits

Who needs a skip permit

To place a builder's skip on a public highway in Sheffield you need to obtain a permit from us. You must be an authorised skip hire contractor to obtain permission to place a skip on the highway.

How much does it cost

A skip permit costs £17 for a maximum period of 15 days. There will be additional costs if you want to place a skip in a Pay and Display bay or where there are yellow lines.

To extend your current skip permit costs £17.

Requests to place a skip on the public highway will not be accepted from the person(s) hiring the skip. The request must be made by the authorised skip operator.

How to apply for a permit

You will need to meet any conditions we ask you to meet. They may take into account:

  • where you want to place the skip
  • its size
  • how it is made visible to oncoming traffic
  • the care and disposal of its contents
  • if it will be lit at night, signed or guarded
  • how it will be removed at the end of the permission period

What happens once you have made an application

We will review your application and give you permission if you meet our conditions. The location of the skip may need to be amended as part of the application process to minimise inconvenience to other parties prior to a permit being granted.

If you ask to place a skip on the highway where a traffic regulation order exists (ie single or double yellow lines) then we will carry out a further assessment of the location before granting your permit. You will need to apply for special dispensation from our Parking Services Team.

Applications by skip operators for skip permits will only be deemed successful once the application has been processed and a permit is produced.

If we grant your permit the details will be recorded and you will be given an exclusive reference code that for that skip at the agreed location, for the agreed period.

It is in the public interest that we process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from us within 12 weeks you should contact us.

Keep within the law

We may pursue a prosecution against any skip hire contractor who places a skip on a road without an appropriate permit or places a skip that does not meet the Builders’ Skips Marking Regulations.
