How to access sheltered housing
We manage a range of sheltered housing schemes providing safe, quality housing for older people who enjoy independent living.
Eligibility for sheltered housing
- anyone aged 60 or over
- people living alone or a couple where at least one person is 60 or over
What support housing residents receive
Before offering you a sheltered property, we will carry out an assessment to make sure it is suitable for you and an individual support plan will be in place when you move in. This will be reviewed every 6 months or if there is a change in your circumstances.
The onsite neighbourhood officer provides general support to residents at each scheme. They are available during weekday office hours to help you access any services you need. They are also responsible for helping develop the community and to assist with various activities.
They are not able to collect pensions, prescriptions or shopping but can help residents without family or friends to find suitable assistance.
Sheltered housing does not provide personal care but we can help you access care if you need it.
The costs of sheltered housing
You pay weekly rent and a service charge.
If you are on a low income you can apply to have an assessment to see if you are entitled to any assistance, this is called a Fairer Charging Assessment.
You will receive help and advice on claiming welfare or Housing Benefit at the start of your tenancy.
How to access sheltered housing
Anyone can apply for sheltered housing. If you're not currently a Council tenant you can register and apply on the Sheffield Property Shop website.
If you're already a Council tenant you can apply through the Property Shop or your Neighbourhood Office.
You can also be referred through the Medical Visitors Team, Social Services or the Health Service. If you’re interested in living in sheltered housing and currently receive care, please talk to your social worker or care manager.
