Supporting Culture in Sheffield
The City Council recognises the importance of Sheffield’s diverse, dynamic cultural offer which makes the city a great place to live, work and study in and visit.
We are a City of Makers. Sheffield is the home of award-winning theatre, top quality contemporary art, music of all genres, unique festivals, craft beers, and thousands of makers and artists across the city.
Since 2010, Sheffield City Council has supported the Sheffield Culture Consortium in leading the city’s strategic cultural direction. The Consortium, which includes the Chief Executives of many of the city’s larger cultural organisations plus the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, brings additional funding and cultural activity to Sheffield as well as supporting networks for artists and creatives.
Many of Sheffield’s cultural institutions, including the theatres, museums and galleries, are run as independent trusts, with core financial support from Sheffield City Council totalling £2.4m per year (2017/18).
You can find out more information on the Sheffield Culture Consortium, Sheffield Creative Guild and Our Favourite Places sites.
