Dog fouling

We're one of the greenest cities in the UK, and we want to keep it that way. Dog fouling spoils our green spaces and the shared areas in your neighbourhood.

You can report dog fouling on roads, pavements and in parks. We'll respond to all complaints as soon as possible.

If the report is a new or isolated incident, the information will be used to help build up a picture of where the problem hotspots are.

Reporting dog fouling you've witnessed

Dog fouling, and other waste, can:

  • damage the environment
  • kill wildlife
  • be a danger to children or others enjoying our parks and streets

For this reason, we want the Sheffield public to report offences that are witnessed.

Offences can result in legal action - this may be a fixed penalty notice and/or prosecution.

Where offenders are identified, informal letters or formal action can be taken. A statement might also be requested to support any evidence.

Please contact Customer Services to report dog fouling, and if possible, tell us:

  • the day, date, location and time that the incident occurred
  • a description of the person in charge of the dog at the time the incident occurred
  • a description of the dog that they were walking
  • if they arrived in a vehicle, a description of the vehicle
  • how far away you were when the incident occurred
  • what kind of view you had

Dog fouling fines

It's an offence for a dog owner not to clean up immediately after their dog in public places such as:

  • roads
  • estates
  • footpaths
  • parks

Failing to clean up could result in a £50 fixed penalty on-the-spot fine, or prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

If you've been issued with a £50 fixed penalty for dog fouling, you can pay this online.

What you can do

In addition to cleaning up after your dog, you can form groups to tackle dog fouling and other litter in your community.

You can organise litter picking groups, get help from waste collection services and tap into the support through 'Friends Of' groups.

Sheffield will be a cleaner and greener city if we all look after the 10 yards outside our homes by:

  • weeding
  • bagging leaves
  • clearing litter
  • clearing drains
  • anything else

When everyone tends to their own area, we cover large sections of our neighbourhood and our city.
