The Council is looking to recruit to its Independent Remuneration Panel.

The Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) Regulations 2003 provide for local authorities to establish and maintain an independent remuneration panel.

This is responsible for the monitoring of the Members’ Allowance Scheme and to make recommendations to the Council regarding the scheme.

The Panel produces a report making recommendations about the payment and amount of allowances, the duties to which special responsibility allowances are applicable; and whether allowances should be index linked. The Panel also makes recommendations to the Council whenever the Council decides to either revoke or amend its current scheme.

Members of the Independent Remuneration Panel must not be:

  • an elected Member of the local authority
  • a member of any committees of the local authority
  • disqualified from becoming a member of the local authority

The post is on a voluntary basis and the term of the appointment is three or four years from the date of appointment.

Being a Panel Member is a voluntary role but the time commitment is relatively low. The Panel may not meet every year and when it does it tends to meet just once to consider information supplied in advance, so it’s a few hours of meeting preparation and attendance.
