Refugees and asylum seekers research guide

Sheffield is the UK’s first City of Sanctuary. The city’s population is diverse and reflects centuries of immigration from around the world. Refugees have been settling in Sheffield since at least the 17th century with the arrival of Huguenots from France. The 19th century saw the growth of a Jewish population, fleeing persecution in Eastern Europe and Russia, whilst the 20th century has been witness to wars and violence which have led to the migration of many people across the globe. Many have come to Sheffield and made it their home.
