An independent panel published a report and a public archive of around 400,000 documents from public agencies including ourselves, involved in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.
We have voluntarily disclosed all of the documents we hold relating to the disaster to contribute towards the archive. This information can be viewed as part of the archive.
John Mothersole, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, commented:
“The Hillsborough Archives are now published and Sheffield City Council has co-operated fully and willingly with the independent panel by releasing all the information and documents we hold so they can now be viewed on-line as part of this archive.
The purpose of the archive is to open up access to a vast range of documents and we appreciate there will be interest in the events surrounding the disaster and in the subsequent years. We anticipate this archive will help those who visit it to form their own views and develop their understanding of the tragedy.
“Our role has already been subject to public inquiry, including the Taylor inquiry, which found that our actions at the time were wanting and criticised. For that we sincerely apologise. Our thoughts remain, as they always have been, with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the disaster.”
