Help for private tenants given notice to leave
If you are a tenant renting from a private landlord and you have been given notice to leave (verbal or written) we may be able to help.
We can:
- check that the notice is legal and valid
- investigate landlords if they have behaved in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried
- provide advice and support to you
We cannot give advice about rehousing and homelessness. We'll refer you to the housing options and advice line if you have been given a legally valid notice and you are threatened with homelessness.
Harassment and illegal eviction
Most tenants cannot be made to leave without their landlord getting a possession order from court. If your landlord is trying to make you leave illegally without taking you to court we will try and intervene to prevent this from happening. You can call us Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0114 273 4680.
If you are threatened with illegal eviction or serious harassment from your landlord outside those times contact Shelter on 0808 800 4444 or call the Police.
Ask us for help
Complete our Request help with an eviction notice form and we will try and get back to you as soon as possible. You should attach a copy of your eviction notice if you have one. Once we have received your request we will want to see your tenancy agreement and may ask for more documents depending on your situation.
