Home Upgrade Grant
Following on from the success of Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) 1, Sheffield City Council have been awarded £4 million government grant funding for HUG 2.
What is HUG 2
The scheme is open to low-income residents living in poorly insulated properties that are not heated by mains gas.
It is fully funded by government and is completely free of charge for participating households. The scheme may upgrade your home with a range of energy efficiency measures (depending on your eligibility).
These measures, such as insulation, air source heat pumps and solar panels, are installed by Sheffield City Council’s delivery partners, Warm Homes Sheffield. This process, known as retrofitting, can make your home more comfortable to live in and minimise your household energy bills.
Eligibility
Funding is only available to owner occupiers or private rental tenants. If you are a private rental tenant, your landlord will be required to make a financial contribution. You may be eligible for the funding if the following statements apply:
- your home has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G. (You can check your EPC rating at GOV.UK: Find an energy certificate. If your home doesn’t have a current EPC, the Warm Homes Sheffield team can arrange one for you)
- your home doesn’t have a mains gas supply, or you don’t use gas as your main source of heating, for example: you use electricity, oil, LPG or solid fuels as the main heating source to heat your home
And either:
- you have a total household annual income of £36,000 or less before housing costs OR £20,000 or less after housing costs (mortgage/rent and council tax)
Or:
- you receive a means-tested benefit
Or:
- your home is within an LSOA (Lower Super Output Area) 1-3 postcode area (you can use the document below to verify this)
All measures are subject to the property receiving a satisfactory survey from a qualified installer and being technically and financially feasible under the funding available within the programme.

If you meet the above criteria, you can apply online so that we can book you in for a home assessment.
