Slavery and abolition research guide

For over 250 years Britain was involved in the slave trade – the enforced capture and removal of Africans who were snatched from their homes and transported by ship across the Atlantic to the West Indies and the Americas. This brutal system was sustained for such a great length of time, mainly because it guaranteed the prosperity of the nation.

Our booklet lists sources available within Sheffield Local Studies Library and Sheffield Archives for the study of slavery, the slave trade, the abolition movements and emancipation up to the mid 19thcentury.
