Christmas opening times 2024: We are closed to all but essential services over the Christmas period. You can still use our online services to report, apply and pay 24/7.
Gas safety checks and heating problems
We visit every Council home to carry out an annual gas service and safety check on gas appliances and gas supply. We're required to do this by law.
These checks ensure that gas fires and heating systems are working effectively and safely, protecting your household and neighbours from the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. When you receive your gas servicing and safety check appointment letter, please check the date and time of the appointment. If this is inconvenient for you call us on 0114 273 5555 to rearrange your appointment.
If you smell gas or fumes or suspect you have a leak, please call the National Gas Service Emergency Line on 0800 111 999.
Protect against carbon monoxide poisoning
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste and can be given off by faulty appliances which burn gas, oil, coal or wood, or if the chimney or flue is blocked.
Annual gas servicing is essential, but there are other things you can do to help protect yourself, family and neighbours
- make sure your home is properly ventilated
- if you’re buying a carbon monoxide detector, look for one which complies with BS7860, although you should never rely entirely on these devices
Heating breakdown troubleshooting
If your heating isn’t working properly, please check:
- you have credit if you have a prepayment meter and that it’s turned on. Check other gas appliances in the property and turn them off if they’re not working too. If they are working, try re-setting your boiler
- fused spur is turned on to the boiler and your display or lights are illuminated
- programmer or timer is set to ‘constant’ or ‘on’, usually indicated with a green or red light
- boiler pressure gauge, if it shows a reading 0.5 bar or less, low pressure could be causing the problem
- room thermostat. Turn it to 21 degrees or higher (above the click) to see if your boiler starts working again
If your heating doesn’t work after carrying out these checks report it to us.
