Cooling tower registration
Any premises using a cooling tower or evaporative condenser within the city boundary must be registered with us.
This register is essential in helping us, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Public Health England (PHE) to quickly trace the possible source of a Legionnaires’ disease cluster or outbreak and to take rapid action to protect the public.

Who should apply to register
You need to register if your commercial site uses a cooling tower or evaporative condenser.
Exceptions
You do not need to register if your cooling tower or condenser:
- contains no water that’s exposed to air
- water supply is not connected
- electrical supply is not connected
Costs
It is free to register.
What you need to provide with your application
If available you should provide a site map of your premises showing the location of the registered cooling towers and/or evaporative condensers.
What happens once you have made an application
We aim to process and acknowledge your registration application(s) within 21 days.
Tacit consent will apply
This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from us within a reasonable period.
