Taxi driver medical assessments

Find out how to complete a medical assessment.

As a licensed private hire or hackney carriage driver, you will need to have good physical and mental health. This is because you are:

  • driving for longer than most other road users
  • helping disabled passengers
  • handling heavy luggage
  • working long hours

To make sure that you can do these things, you will need to pass a DVLA Group 2 Medical Fitness examination when you first apply to be a licensed driver.

About medical assessments

Group 2 Medical Fitness examinations will focus on:

  • neurological (brain and nerves) disorders
  • cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) disorders
  • diabetes
  • mental health
  • drug or alcohol misuse
  • visual (eyesight) disorders
  • renal (kidney, ureters and urethra) disorders
  • respiratory (breathing) disorders
  • any other conditions

If at any time we have any concerns about your health, we may ask you to take a further medical examination.

You must also email taxilicensing@sheffield.gov.uk or telephone 0114 273 4264 if there are any changes to your health that might affect your ability to drive.

Medical assessments by age

If you are 45 years of age or older, you will need to take a medical examination every 5 years.

If you are 65 years of age or older, you will need to take a medical examination every year.

Where recommended by the GP, you may be required to a take medical examination, or other medical tests, on a more frequent basis.
