Taxi driver criminal and motoring convictions

Find out more about criminal, motoring and overseas convictions.

When you apply or renew your badge, we will look at any and all criminal and motoring convictions, such as:

  • crimes resulting in death
  • exploitation
  • violence towards a person
  • possession of a weapon
  • sexual offences
  • dishonesty
  • supply or possession of drugs
  • discrimination
  • drink driving or driving under the influence of drugs
  • hand-held devices  
  • other minor or major traffic offences

Licensing sub-committee referrals  

If you have relevant convictions your application may be referred to our Licensing Sub-Committee, which will review your application.

You can also be referred to the Licensing Sub-Committee for other reasons such as any:

  • conviction for an offence concerned with or connected to hackney carriage or private hire activity
  • term of imprisonment or custody, including suspended sentences
  • caution, warning, fixed penalty notice, Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC), civil injunction or Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), failure to comply with the hackney carriage and private hire driver conditions
  • failure to comply with legislative requirements
  • instance of plying for hire
  • if you receive a series of complaints
  • breach of the Equality Act 2010
  • information we receive that has a reasonable basis of credibility and is related to your job as a hackney carriage and private hire driver – this could include unproven allegations or charges for which you have been acquitted
  • any other reason that the Chief Licensing Officer feels is appropriate

Overseas convictions

If you have lived outside of the UK for 3 or more continuous months, then you will need to provide us with evidence about any criminal convictions. You can do this by using a Certificates of Good Character.  

If you have committed an offence overseas that is the same as those listed in the ‘disclosure and barring checks’ section, then you should get legal advice to make sure that the information is truthful and accurate.
