Applying for a new private hire vehicle licence

Follow these steps to apply for your new private hire vehicle licence in Sheffield.

How to apply

There are 3 stages that your vehicle licence application will go through:

  1. Apply – you can use our online form to apply for your licence
  2. Process – we receive your application and check through it
  3. Determine – we decide whether to grant your application if the vehicle passes its compliance test

Test appointments

Once you have made an application for a private hire vehicle licence, your vehicle will be issued with a date to attend a compliance test. 

  1. Private hire disclosure and barring checks

    If you don’t currently hold a driver licence with us, you will need to tell us whether you have any criminal convictions. To do this, you will need to send us a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate. 

  2. Right to work in the UK for private hire vehicles

    To licence your private hire vehicle, you must prove to us that you are legally allowed to work in the UK.

  3. Private hire vehicle insurance

    Once the vehicle has passed the compliance test, you will need to have insurance to carry passengers. We will need to see a copy of the insurance certificate before we issue the licence. Once granted, your private hire vehicle licence will be valid for a maximum of 12 months.
