Road traffic accident or damage

What to do if your private hire or hackney carriage vehicle has been involved in a road traffic accident.

Contact us about an accident

You need to contact us within 72 hours if your licensed vehicle has been involved in a road traffic accident or received damage that in any way affects its:

  • safety
  • performance
  • appearance

Reporting an accident

You will need to complete an Accident Damage Report form.

This will help us to understand what happened and the damage that’s been caused to the vehicle.

Inspecting your vehicle

We will inspect the vehicle in person to decide whether the damage means that it cannot be used as a licensed vehicle to carry passengers.

If the vehicle is found not to be fit, the vehicle's licence will be suspended until it has been repaired and passed a compliance test at our testing station.

If your vehicle cannot be driven

You must contact us if your vehicle is so damaged that it cannot be driven. To do this, you need to provide us with photographs that show this damage.

You will then be asked to return your vehicle licence plate along with your completed Vehicle Accident Report Form.

Once the vehicle is repaired, it is your responsibility to tell us so that we can arrange a compliance test. If we have not been able to inspect your vehicle in person, then we will not issue you with a suspension notice.
