Hackney carriage advertising consent

Find out what to do if want to advertise on your hackney carriage vehicle.

You need to contact us with your advertising proposal before you add it to your taxi. We will check that the advertisement is appropriate and is not:

  • promoting either directly or indirectly, smoking (including tobacco and/or vaping), alcohol, and gambling
  • of a sexual, religious or political nature
  • likely to cause offence to members of the public

Contract for the advertisement requirements

You need to think about the following when applying for advertising consent:

  • advertisements must be submitted by the owner of the taxi
  • the contract for advertisement must state the vehicle details and when the contract will end
  • the contract must contain a condition stating that the advertisement must be removed at the end of the contract term

Where you can advertise

You can advertise on your taxi in the following ways:

  • as a door sign
  • on the rear window (this must use contra vision or similar technology)
  • on the tip seats
  • as half or full livery
  • on a digital screen
  • as illuminated exterior media

If a full livery advertisement has been applied to your vehicle, the DVLA V5C logbook must be updated, stating that the colour is ‘full livery’.

Advertising must not cover notices, signs or plates. If we feel that advertising is in such a condition that it has a negative effect on the safety or appearance of the vehicle, then your vehicle licence will be suspended with immediate effect. The suspension will be lifted once these issues have been corrected.
