Meet the family that brought snooker to Sheffield

Mark Watterson's uncle, Mike Watterson, brought the World Snooker Championship to Sheffield back in 1977.

Mark has been to the snooker every year since the Champs moved to Sheffield.

When they began in 1927, the Snooker Championships never had a permanent base, playing in various locations for 50 years.

That was until 48 years ago, when Carole Watterson saw a show at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and suggested to her husband, sports promoter Mike Watterson, that it would be an ideal setting for the sport.

Today, approximately 12 thousand people attend the World Snooker Championships, at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

If you have any old photos or special memories of snooker in Sheffield, we’d love to know.

Please email them to snooker@sheffield.gov.uk and we will share the best ones.
