The Crucible: "What makes it the perfect theatre makes it the perfect snooker venue."

Ever wondered what is takes to turn a globally renowned theatre into a world-class sports venue?

This weekend, Sheffield kicked off the World Snooker Champs in style!

The Crucible Theatre has been the home of the Snooker Championships since 1977. In Spring, the venue is transformed from a major producing theatre, into a world-class sports venue.

Many famous names have performed at the Crucible during its history including Joseph Fiennes, Lily James, Joanna Lumley and Dominic West.

With a longstanding reputation for bold new work, many multi-award-winning shows have been made in Sheffield including Life of Pi and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, which have both enjoyed West End and international transfers before returning as part of UK tours.

The sensational Sheffield-set new musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge first opened in 2019 before returning the Crucible and transferring to the National Theatre and the West End in 2024.

The intense atmosphere and magic of the theatre is often celebrated by actors and snooker players alike. Audiences sit on three sides and no matter where you sit in the auditorium you are never more than 20m from the action.
