Council earmarks over £3million to improve pedestrian crossings across city

Several locations across Sheffield are set to see new or improved crossings as part of the Council’s plans to improve pedestrian access while, at the same time, aiming to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured.

Several locations across Sheffield are set to see new or improved crossings as part of the Council’s plans to improve pedestrian access while, at the same time, aiming to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured.

The proposals form part of Sheffield City Council’s ambition to cut the number of deaths on the city’s roads down to zero while, at the same time, making the area a more attractive place to walk and cycle around.

Transport bosses are requesting the continuation of more than £3million improving several junctions and installing pedestrian crossings at locations across the city as part of a raft of proposals totalling more than £13million over the next two financial years.

The plans include the continued expansion of 20mph zones, local safety enhancements, improvements to Public Right of Ways and enhancements to the cycling network.

Sheffield is a fantastic city, it’s a changing city with incredible regeneration happening right across it, but in order for the transformation to work and really reach its full potential, we need to improve how people get around. This investment forms a crucial part of that process, making it safer, easier and more convenient for people to walk and cycle around.

Installing more pedestrian crossings, more 20mph zones and improving Public Right of Ways, along with continuing the cycling infrastructure, will really help achieve that goal.”

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council

Under the proposals, pedestrian crossings will be installed in areas such as Crookes Valley Road, Handsworth Grange Road, London Road/Hill Street, Staniforth Road, Birley Spa Lane, and Myrtle Road/Annes Road among many others.

The City Council receives a significant number of requests for crossings to be installed right across the city with sites assessed against a number of set criteria, including collisions. The current locations earmarked for improvements have scored the highest in terms of priority and will be focused on first before other locations are considered.

We have been very clear that we have an ambition to ensure that nobody is killed or seriously injured on Sheffield’s roads as soon as possible. The plans in this proposal will help us achieve that goal, making the city’s roads, pavements and cycle paths as safe as possible for everyone to use.
